The new Coronavirus relief bill has extended the CDC moratorium on certain evictions for nonpayment of rent through January 31, 2021. The original deadline was this Thursday.

Any tenant facing eviction for nonpayment of rent should read the attached closely, and if applicable, sign and deliver to their landlord. Any tenant who has already handed this statement to their landlord, before the extension, does not need to do anything further to benefit from this extension (other than the already imposed requirements to pay what rent they can and to seek out rental assistance). That being said, turning in an updated form with the new deadline would not hurt anything, and they should always pay attention to any notices on their doors or in the mail in case their landlords do attempt to seek an eviction in violation of this moratorium.

As always, people facing eviction or dealing with any dispute with their landlord can apply for representation by Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma at 1-888-534-5243 or at oklegalconnect.org. And in Oklahoma County, we are currently and for the foreseeable future attending every eviction docket and taking new clients there.

CDC Issues Emergency Health Order Halting Most Evictions Through December 31
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued an emergency public health order to temporarily halt most evictions to prevent the further spread of COVID-19, effective September 4, the anticipated date of publication in the Federal Register. The order will be effective through December 31.
Any past-due rent owed by the renter, including late fees, will come due upon expiration of the Order December 31. Renters who have fallen behind on paying rent will likely face eviction, as they will be unable to pay the past-due amount.
Eviction prevention assistance affords protection to both the renter and landlord.
