The 70s painted it. The 90s sided over it. The 2010s whitewashed it. And every time, brick waits it out and comes back like nothing happened.

Here’s why. Brick doesn’t need repainting every seven years, doesn’t dent in a hailstorm, doesn’t fade to that chalky gray by year fifteen. It just sits there looking like money while trendier exteriors cycle through their lifespans.

Buyers feel it too. Walk people through a brick home and someone always says “they don’t build them like this anymore.” That’s buyer language for permanent, and permanent is the most expensive feeling in real estate.

Every tradition you grew up with started as somebody’s random idea. One year your grandmother made the thing, and then she made it again, and forty years later it’s sacred.

Which means you’re allowed to invent them too. September is quietly the best month for it, because the calendar hasn’t filled with obligations yet. A few worth stealing:

The first-cold-morning breakfast. The first morning that actually feels like fall, somebody makes the big breakfast. No date on the calendar, the weather decides. Kids remember this stuff forever.

The apple orchard rematch. Same orchard, same weekend, same photo spot every year. The pictures get better as the kids get taller.

The September porch dinner. One dinner outside before the season closes, phones inside, good dishes outside. That’s the whole rule.

The neighborhood walk with cocoa. First crisp evening, walk the same loop, judge the early Halloween decorators lovingly.

Here’s the thing about home that took me years of walking through other people’s houses to learn: what makes a place feel like home isn’t the house. It’s the repetition inside it. The same table, the same season, the same people, one more year. That’s the thing buyers are actually shopping for and can’t name.

So start one this month. Pick something small, do it on purpose, and do it again next year. That’s the entire recipe.
