These past few days gave me an unexpected perspective.
I’m staying somewhere that is both a hotel and an Airbnb. It’s clean. Comfortable. Safe. But it’s simple. No fancy amenities. No endless basket of toiletries. No curated coffee bar. No “wow” factor.
And you know what I’ve thought about exactly zero times?
The shampoo.
The coffee.
The perfection.
Whether there was one grain of sand on the floor.
Perfect furniture.
A stray dog hair.
What I’ll remember are the sunsets, the beach, golf cart rides, the laughs with my best friends, the meals we shared, and how relaxed I felt.
As someone who hosts vacation rentals, that realization hit me hard.
Behind every vacation rental is a real person who genuinely wants their guests to have a wonderful stay. We welcome sandy feet, wet swimsuits, children, DOGS, family gatherings, celebrations, and all the beautiful chaos that comes with making memories. We partner with great cleaners who work incredibly hard. We repair things that break. We replace what’s worn. We obsess over the details because we truly care.
But homes aren’t museum pieces, and they’re not five-star luxury hotels. They’re places where life happens.
Of course guests deserve a clean, comfortable, well-cared-for home. That’s non-negotiable. But I also hope we don’t lose sight of why we travel in the first place.
The best vacations aren’t remembered because the coffee pods were perfectly arranged or the towels were folded just so.
They are remembered because, for a little while, life felt lighter. We smiled, we were with those we love the most in the whole world.
That was a good reminder for me…not just as a host, but as a traveler.
