That's the part of the morning nobody expects.

Take last year's income. Break it into earned, portfolio, passive. Write the three numbers down.

Four minutes. That's all it takes. And almost nobody in that room had ever done it before — not because it's difficult, but because seeing it in your own handwriting is a different experience than knowing it vaguely.

Six questions before a dollar moves.

Nobody sat us down and explained these. So we learn them the expensive way, one bad deal at a time.

1. What kind of income does this actually produce — earned, portfolio, or passive?
2. How is it taxed, and when?
3. What has to be true for this to work?
4. What happens if I'm wrong?
5. How do I get my money back out, and how fast?
6. Does this need me, or does it work without me?

That's the list. Print it. Tape it somewhere you'll see it.

Most of the money I've lost in my life went to deals where I couldn't have answered four of those six — and I didn't find out until afterward that I couldn't.

Ask them out loud, before the money moves, and you'll kill most of your bad deals for free.

The number that ends the argument.

Your Wealth Ratio:

(Passive income + Portfolio income) ÷ Your monthly expenses

That's it. One number. And it tells you something your income never will.

If it's 0.10, ten percent of your life is paid for whether you show up or not.
If it's 1.0, you are financially free. Today. Regardless of what you earn.

Here's what makes it uncomfortable: your salary is not in the numerator. It can't be. Earned income stops when you stop, so it can't buy you freedom — it can only rent it, month to month, for as long as you keep working.

You can make $400,000 a year and have a Wealth Ratio of zero.

Most people have never calculated theirs. It takes about four minutes. We did it on paper at the Round Table last month, and the silence in the room while people worked it out told you everything.

Most people cannot name their own top three values. That is the whole problem.

Ask a room of business owners what drives their decisions and you will get adjectives - integrity, hard work, family. Ask which three, in order, and the room goes quiet.

It matters because you do not lead from a mission statement. You lead from whatever you actually value, named or not. Unnamed values still drive the decision - they just drive it in the dark, and then you spend a year wondering why the team went a direction you never intended.

Here is the exercise we run:

1. Write down twelve values that genuinely describe you. Not the ones that sound good - the ones that show up in what you actually do.
2. Cut it to three. This is the hard part, and it is the part that does the work.
3. Take one decision you are sitting on right now and hold it against those three. Most of the time the answer is already there.

Do that honestly and you stop managing and start leading, because your people can finally predict you. Predictability is most of what trust is.

The part that cost me years:

You didn't leave the Employee quadrant. You just moved seats.

Most of us who walked away from a job believe we escaped. We didn't. We bought ourselves a harder job with worse hours and no benefits, and we called it freedom.

Here's the test, and it's brutal in its simplicity: if you stop showing up, does the money stop?

If yes, you don't own a business. You own a seat. It might be a very good seat — better pay, better view, you picked the chair yourself. It's still a seat in somebody's system, and that somebody is you.

Employee: earns → taxed → spends what's left.
Owner: earns → spends → taxed on what's left.

Read those two lines again. That's not a tax trick. That's the entire order of operations of your financial life, and almost nobody is ever shown it.

One piece of arithmetic. It takes ten seconds and it ends most arguments.

The Rule of 72.

72 ÷ your rate of return = the number of years your money takes to double.

8% → doubles in 9 years
12% → doubles in 6 years
4% → doubles in 18 years

That's it. That's the whole thing.

Now sit with it, because the gap between 4% and 12% doesn't look like much on a page. Over thirty years it's the difference between your money doubling once and doubling five times. Same dollar. Same thirty years. Wildly different life.

Most people have never run this on their own money. Not because it's hard — you can do it on a napkin — but because nobody ever sat them down and showed it to them.

Five words I wrote in my own log on August 17, 2009:

"I am 40 and almost broke."

Not dramatically broke. No repo man, no eviction. Worse than that, in a way — I was fine. Employed, respected, competent. Three careers deep, having rebuilt my whole skillset every time the industry moved: COBOL, then PowerBuilder, then Java.

And I had almost nothing to show for any of it.

Here's what took me years to understand. It wasn't a grit problem. I had grit. I had rebuilt myself from scratch three separate times to stay employable. Nobody works their way out of that with more effort.

It was a mechanics problem. Every dollar I'd ever earned was the same kind of dollar — the kind you trade hours for, the kind taxed hardest, the kind that stops the day you stop.

Three things changed it, and the first one was just this: I stopped measuring how much I earned and started measuring what I owned.
