Joseph Cetrulo, a New Jersey-based restaurateur, loves a project. When he got wind of a foreclosed castle for sale near his home in Morris Township, N.J., he tackled it head on, renovating everything from the kitchen to the dungeon. ⁠

Cetrulo, 63, and his ex-wife, Catherine Cetrulo, bought the circa-1917 mansion called Glynallyn Castle in 2014 for $4 million from the Community Bank of Bergen County. The home is on the National Register of Historic Places and was built by businessman George Marshall Allen. Allen modeled it after the Compton Wynyates in England, a Tudor castle that dates back to 1481.⁠

Allen built a chapel and a great hall with a roughly 25-foot ceiling and a minstrels' gallery. He installed several hidden doors, including one that leads from the great hall to the dungeon, which has gothic groin-vault ceilings, stone moldings and carvings.⁠

When he toured Glynallyn Castle, Cetrulo said it was dreary and falling apart. Some of the rooms and flooring sustained water damage from broken pipes. A mapmaking company that once used it as its headquarters had altered the space to create offices.⁠

Catherine was hesitant at first because of the work it required, but trusted Joseph. “He’s really good at the business end of it with the contractors, so I had full faith in him,” she said.⁠
