You think there's one type of firefly in the yard. There are probably six.

That light show in July isn't one species. It's multiple species flashing at different times, different heights, different colors, for different reasons. Each flash is a species-specific signal. A female sitting in the grass reads the pattern and ignores every wrong one.

🌿 Who's actually out there:

The one you know — flies in a J-shaped arc, single yellow pulse on the upswing. She answers from the grass with a timed delay. Wrong timing, wrong species, no mate.

The early one — amber-orange glow, active in May, perched on tree trunks and branches. Out weeks before anyone expects fireflies.

The ghost — Appalachian forests only. No flash. Males drift at knee height producing a continuous pale bluish-white glow. Females are wingless, glowing faintly from the forest floor.

The killer — she watches other species' flash patterns, learns the correct response delay, mimics it. The male flies down expecting a mate. She eats him and extracts defensive chemicals she can't produce herself.

The invisible one — active during the day. No glow. Looks like a small dark beetle with orange edges on tree bark. Out since March. Most people don't realize she's a firefly.

The underground ones — every species above spent a year or more as a larva in the soil, hunting slugs and snails in the dark. They glow underground. Nobody sees it.

🐾 What they need:

- No lawn chemicals — pesticides reach the larval layer in the soil
- Dark yards after sunset — artificial light disrupts flash communication
- One unmowed edge — tall grass is where females sit to answer
