Performing a site investigation in preparation for the conditions assessment of "The Mandan" in Fort Benton, MT. This keelboat was constructed for the use in the 1952 film The Big Sky" starring Kirk Douglas, based on the book by A. B. Guthrie. A special shout out to Dan Nelsen for being such a great help during the day and journalist Claire Shinner for capturing these fantastic photos.

History books can tell us a lot about the early days of Missoula, but the city likes to keep her secrets, too.

Last month I was honored to be invited to present my research at The Delft University of Technology Conference: Heritage and the Sustainable Development Goals - Delft, Netherlands. It was an incredible meeting of like minded professionals from around the world - We are a diverse and mighty group that I am privileged to be a part of.

For one week this past August I led a team of volunteers from all over the country in specialized preservation treatments to help sustain Montana’s built heritage and uncover valuable historic archeology. We worked on 2 specific log structures, pulling loose and failing mortar daubing and replacing with matched historic samples. You will see all ages from 9 - 75 years working in unison as we rehabbed The Jackson House (a former Post Office) and The Marmot Shack. Drop cloths are down to protect surface archaeology, which is present at the site. This project was made possible with a grant from The Montana History Foundation and we hope to continue expandanding upon this model for the preservation of Montana's Heritage and built environment in the future.

Our workshop started this last Monday and there is much to post and report, but still work to be done! This is a photo of a few members of my team who arrived from different parts of the country to participate in this once in a lifetime opportunity at historic Bannack State Park. Our temps have been in the high 80''s all week, and we are at altitude, so here are some of the workshop crew applying linseed oil in the shade and staying hydrated!! Linseed oil is a natural and respected treatment to hydrate exterior log structures without compromising its integrity.
