It honestly makes me really sad to hear that United Way in Thurston County is closing after nearly 100 years of serving people.

For decades they’ve helped connect families to food, housing resources, and essential support. And the timing couldn’t be worse. Right now groceries, power, and rent are already stretching people to the limit. Losing organizations like this only means more people may fall through the cracks, and that’s hard to see happening in our own community.

Someone said to me recently, sometimes everything has to be cleared away so something new can be built.

Maybe that’s where we are right now. Maybe this moment will push us to create new systems that better support people facing the rising cost of living.

But it does make me wonder… what do you think needs to change so communities can better support people who are struggling right now?
