Wind chills of up to 30 below this weekend, please be careful if you're going to be outside. You can get frost bite in as little as 15 minutes so cover up and stay inside if possible.

The commercial snow management request are being sent to us already. That's what I like, being in snow mode in the middle of summer. Have one very large one on the hook for next year and quoting some additional shopping centers for this season. Working hard to land at least one of them.

Looks like the snow storm that is headed our way is going to stay further south of our area and won’t be as bad as originally thought. Since it will be snowing during the daylight hours, snow accumulation will most likely be on the grass, cars and roof tops. Unless it snows heavy at times total accumulation should be minimal, about an inch for our area. It might actually start to warm up late next week. It’s a good time to start planning your outdoor projects. If you’re stuck for ideas on what you want to do, give us a call (570-499-0886) and we’ll be glad to help you design that outdoor living space you’ve been dreaming about.

If you’re getting tired of the cold winter months, just think spring is not that far off and it will be sunny and warm once again in NePA. We are starting to take request for quotes for weekly lawn care service for the upcoming summer growing season. Rates start as low as $30.00 per week (plus sales tax) and senior citizen rates start as low as $25.00 per week (plus sales tax). If you are interested in a quote for services, give us a call and we’ll be happy to come out for a site visit and discuss your summer lawn maintenance requirements. One more it of information in case you’re confused by the “sale tax” believe it or not Pennsylvania has a sales tax on lawn care services, as well as a lot of other lawn maintenance services that you would never think is taxable. We are sorry for the added expense but the tax man has his rules.

Since spring it just around the corner and frosty lawns are normal for this time of year, the following is a lawn care tip from "TheLawnInstitute.org" web site. As always if you have any landscaping questions you can contact us and we will be glad to help.

Stay Off a Frosty Lawn

Avid golfers and soccer players are familiar with frost delays for early morning matches. These delays are for the protection of the grass. Homeowners should take note not to start lawn activities too early on these brisk mornings.

Frost is most easily described as frozen dew. A settling frost causes a covering of ice crystals on leaf surfaces. When this area is trafficked it can cause the grass to be injured. Foot traffic or vehicular traffic can cause damage that will take weeks or months to heal.

Why the injury is caused is debated, some claim the cells of the plant are damaged because the water in the leaf tissue is frozen and the tissue is brittle. Others believe that the crystallized water punctures the grass blades in thousands of places causing wounds that cannot heal. Whatever the cause, the damage cannot be refuted. Injury to frost covered grass will not be seen right away but will be noticeable 12-48 hrs after the damage is done. Often the injured grass will get a purple or black hue. The grass will then turn brown as it dies. Dead grass will leave areas for weeds to germinate. Damaged grass that does not die will be more susceptible to disease.

To avoid damaging grass that is covered in frost it is important that it not be walked on, mowed or trafficked in any way. Frost will quickly melt once the sun rises. Low lying areas and areas in the shade of trees and buildings will be the last to thaw. Have some patience and the grass will appreciate it.
