When I was a little girl, people always asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I had a huge imagination. And likely if you asked me on a different day, you’d get a different answer.

But the one thing I never said I wanted to be was President of the United States. And why not? Because although I couldn’t voice it at the time, I didn’t believe women were allowed to be the leader of our country. I didn’t see women in power. And there had never been a female president. I did understand that I could marry a powerful man, and he could be the President of the United States. I knew I could be a First Lady. But that’s as far as my powerful imagination could take me.

I want our girls of today to have a different frame of reference. I want our girls to grow up with confidence that they are capable and deserving of all positions. I want girls to know that their kindness and compassion are strengths, not weaknesses. That their fierce ambition and drive and intellect makes them badass and not a bitch. I want girls to see the women in their life support each other, not compete for a tiny slice of an imaginary pie. I want girls and boys to see the men in their life respecting women and encouraging them without limitation.

We’ve come along way since I was a girl. Women have been rising up and taking their place alongside men. And in no way does it diminish a man’s importance, strength and power. When women are able to step up and reach their potential, men and women will rise to new heights together. I do not want a world where only women are in charge. I don’t want to pull down men. I simply want a world where we work together to use our individual strengths to improve as a whole.

So today, I proudly voted for Kamala Harris. And I hope with all my heart that I can look back on today and say that I voted for the very first female President of the United States.
