Daingerfield, the county seat and largest town, is fifty miles southwest of Texarkana and 125 miles northeast of Dallas. Highway 67 traverses the northern part of the countyfrom east to west, as does Interstate 30, while U.S. highway 259 extends north and south. The county's transportation needs are also served by two railroads, the St. Louis and Southwestern and the Louisiana and Arkansas. These railroads were originally constructed in the late 1870s as the Texas and St. Louis and the East Line and Red River, respectively. The county does have a small airport that can accommodate small planes. The county comprises 256 square miles of rolling East Texas timberlands, an area that is heavily forested with a great variety of softwoods and hardwoods, most notably pine and oak.The northern one-third of the county watershed is drained by the Sulphur river while the remainder is drained by Cypress creek. The soil is predominantly light colored, acidic, and sandy to loamy, generally with a deep reddish subsoil. Between 21 and 30 percent of the land in the county is classified as farmland. Mineral resources include clay, lignite coal, oil, industrial sand, and iron ore. Temperatures range from an average high of 95°F in July to an average low of 30° in January. Rainfall averages slightly more than forty-six inches a year, with a growing season averaging 236 days. Archeological history indicates Caddo Indians occupied the area for centuries before the arrival of Europeans. The county's four largest towns are Daingerfield, Lone Star, Naples, and Omaha; which, like virtually all small towns in America, are transforming into bedroom communities of a nearby larger town or city...in this case Mt Pleasant...which is a vibrant, growing city (15,000+) with a very healthy economy fueled mostly by coal mining, manufacturing, and agriculture (specifically poultry production). Other agriculture interests include livestock ranching, timber production and a limited amount of tilled cropland. Infrastructure:
The county is served by local clinics in addition to Titus Regional Medical Center in nearby Mt Pleasant. In addition to ambulance service, the hospital employs a medical helicopter. Aside from the small Morris county airport, nearby Titus county airport can accommodate private jets and the airports in Longview and Texarkana provide commercial feeder line service for the large airports such as DFW, Little Rock, and Texarkana. Northeast Texas Community college was constructed in nearby Titus county (Mt Pleasant) in the mid to late 80s and provides additional educational opportunities, especially in regard to the trade industry. Hunting/Fishing
The long growing season lends itself well to very good fishing and boating opportunities, with thousands and thousands of private ponds, the Sulphur river, Cypress creek, and nearby Lake Monticello. Of course these are only a few of the fishing opportunities. Some of the best bass fishing in America is found right here in East Texas. As for deer hunting, virtually all the land base in the county is private, with a good many hunting ranches available. Of course owning your own land eliminates any need to look any further than your own back door to hunt and fish. In addition to whitetail deer, there are wild hogs, opossum, raccoons, armadillo, coyotes, bobcats, and of course a wide variety of waterfowl. Being a woodland, we do not have any upland game birds. We leave those for West Texas. Local place of interest include:
