🌿 Honoring Indigenous Peoples’ Day

Did you know? Omaha takes its name from the Umoⁿhoⁿ (Omaha) Nation, whose name means “upstream people.”

Long before Omaha became a city, the Omaha people lived, farmed, traded, and cared for the lands along the Missouri River. Their history, culture, and enduring connection to this region remain an essential part of Nebraska’s identity.

Today, the Omaha Inland Port Authority honors the Indigenous peoples who shaped this land and the generations who continue their legacy.

One week ago, OIPA Executive Director Garry Clark and Mark Coulter, Attorney at Rouse Frets White (former Port KC General Counsel) testified before the Nebraska Legislature’s Urban Affairs Committee on LR418, sharing an update on the Omaha Inland Port Authority’s progress, priorities, and continued work to drive investment and economic opportunity in North Omaha.

Thanks to Senator Terrell McKinney as Chair of the Urban Affairs Committee for the opportunity. The testimony highlighted OIPA’s work around the Innovation District, Airport Business Park, housing and business investment, job creation, and the partnerships being built to move these initiatives forward.

We appreciate the opportunity to keep lawmakers informed about the work underway and the return on investment these efforts can create for North Omaha, Omaha, and the State of Nebraska.

The Omaha Inland Port Authority (OIPA) is proud to be represented at the 2026 AAPA Annual Convention & Expo, September 28–30 in New Orleans.

OIPA Executive Director Garry Clark will speak on “From Freight to Futures: How Inland Ports Can Drive Community Transformation,” highlighting how inland ports can serve as catalysts for economic development, infrastructure investment, workforce opportunity, innovation and community transformation.

The three-day convention will feature nine tracks and more than 50 sessions, bringing together the people who power ports across the U.S., Canada, the Caribbean and Latin America.

We’re excited to share the OIPA story and the work underway in North Omaha with port and economic development leaders from across the Americas.
