We’ve spent years living and working in Omaha, and a few of these still caught us off guard.
Some local history most people never learned:
– There’s a piece of Iowa tucked inside our city, and an 1877 flood put it there (hi, Carter Lake)
– In 1955, Omaha passed Chicago as the meatpacking capital of the world
– Standing Bear’s landmark civil rights case was decided right here in 1879
– Omaha threw a world’s fair in 1898 that drew 2.6 million people
– Duke Ellington and Count Basie once played a ballroom on North 24th
Save this for the next time someone says nothing happens here. What did we miss? Drop the Omaha fact you’re surprised didn’t make the list 👇
