Spring cleaning is in the air again. I thought i would once again share some tips I collected to stay on top of it.

Everyone knows deep cleaning is not isolated to the spring.
We spend countless hours prior to the holidays preparing our homes for entertaining of family and friends. Christmas morning is not the time to sit with the family opening gifts only to see that annoying cobweb in the corner that you are just itching to take down. Here are a few tips to help you spruce up your home:
1. My grandma and mom taught me there are 3 things to make sure you keep in order every day: make your bed, do your dishes, put you clothes away. Make sure you have a space for a laundry basket, whether in the bathroom, bedroom, or laundry room. Keep the dirty ones there.
2. Don't tackle it all at once, make a 7 day plan to deep clean.
3. Take a laundry basket through your home and pick up anything that is out of place and find a home for it. If if does not have a home, consider if it is something you really need.
4. Pay attention to details such as dead leaves on plants and remove them.
5. Clean out all closets, making sure items are placed in order, vacuum the corners, ceilings, floors of the closet. Spray a rag with wood cleaner to wipe down shelves.
Tip for linen closet: Place the sheets in a matching sheet set in one of the pillowcases to keep the set compact and together.
6. Clean outside of cabinets using a vinegar, olive oil, and water solution. This is a natural solution that will not attack the finish on your cabinets, but will break down grease, is antibacterial and leave a shine. Use a toothbrush with a baking soda, water, and vinegar solution to clean the cabinet hardware.
7. Empty cabinets and wipe with simple dish soap and water solution. Line cabinets with shelf liners.
8. Next start working from the top of your home down, starting with putting the brush attachment on your vacuum and vacuuming your ceiling. Next using a mild dish soap and water solution dab any stains on the ceiling. Be careful not to get much moisture on any popcorn ceilings.
9. Clean any ceiling fans. Take an old pillowcase and drape over each blade and slide it. This will catch the dust off the blade. Use a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water to wipe the blades down.
10. Take down any light fixture globes and soak in dish soap and water to clean.
11. Wipe down walls with mild dish soap and water solution. Be careful with flat paints as they do not hold up to moisture as well. wipe the light switch and outlet covers as well.
12. Vacuum screens and clean windows with vinegar and water solution.
13. Vacuum floors and furniture. be sure to use corner attachment in any crevices and brush attachment for baseboards.
14. Dust tables and furniture with same solution as cabinets and any glass tops or mirrors with the vinegar water solution.
14. Remove any register covers and soak in dish soap and water and scrub with a toothbrush.
15. Scrub your showers and sinks with baking soda and water solution. to remove tough water stains and mineral deposits, apply baking soda and water and soak up to 45 minutes, then scrub.
16. Wipe down toilet with vinegar and water or bleach and water.
17. Mop floors with 1 cup apple cider vinegar to 1 gallon hot water. Be sure to take a rag to wipe around edges of room where dirty water may collect.
18. The final item to clean are baseboards. Mix vinegar, dish soap, and water together and wipe baseboards. Use a cotton swap to get in small spaces. To prevent dust build up, wipe the baseboards down with a dryer sheet to eliminate static that attracts dust.

Many potential home buyers are concerned about purchasing a home with the current economic turmoil. Food for thought, note how home prices rose drastically between 2020 to 2022 (about 30% in the 3 years, collectively, in our area). This was when you could get a 4%, or even lower, 30 year fixed rate mortgage. As home prices increase, mortgage rates generally decrease and vise versa. Currently, fixed rate mortgages are at a 6 month low, home prices have stabilized to an approximately 4% increase last year. It seems right now would be prime time to buy, if/ when, the economy shifts we will see either higher prices or mortgage rates.

The Winona County Sheriff's Office would like to inform residents of recent suspicious activity involving attempted burglaries. The suspect's modus operandi (MO) in these attempted burglaries is that he will drive to a person’s house, often in rural areas, and knock on the door. If someone at the house answers the door, the person will make up an excuse as to why he was at the house. If no one answers the door, the person will enter the house and steal items.
There have been incidents in Winona, Wabasha, Fillmore, and Houston counties occurring, although no actual entries into homes are known as of recent.
