Resurrection Ferns and Live Oaks
If you have ever noticed small ferns clinging to the limbs of live oaks, you are looking at resurrection ferns. These native air plants have grown alongside Southern oaks for centuries, thriving quietly above us.
Resurrection ferns grow on bark, not in soil. They are not harmful to the tree. During dry weather, they curl up and turn gray or brown, appearing lifeless. After rain or humidity, they absorb moisture from the air and return to a vibrant green, often within hours.
Live oaks provide the perfect home. Their wide, twisting branches collect moisture and create sheltered spaces where these ferns can grow. This natural partnership has existed long before modern landscaping.
For generations, resurrection ferns have symbolized endurance and renewal in the South. They remind us that not everything that looks dormant is gone. Some things are simply waiting for the right conditions to thrive again.
