🛶 The Fish River in Baldwin County is not on most people's Gulf Coast itinerary. It doesn't have a famous beach or a celebrated restaurant or a music festival. What it has is some of the clearest blackwater river paddling in coastal Alabama, a canopy of ancient cypress and water oak that closes over the river in a way that makes the outside world feel genuinely distant, and a collection of fishing camp cottages along its banks that represent a way of spending time on the Alabama coast that has almost completely disappeared everywhere else — simple, water-oriented, unhurried, and entirely unconcerned with being discovered.
The Fish River drains a significant portion of central Baldwin County before emptying into the upper reaches of Weeks Bay, and its watershed encompasses some of the most intact longleaf pine and hardwood bottomland forest remaining in coastal Alabama. The river itself runs clear and cool even in summer, its blackwater clarity allowing vision to the sandy bottom in depths that would be opaque in more turbid waterways. The fishing camp culture that developed along its banks over the first half of the twentieth century — modest cottages built on the high bank, docks extending to the river, johnboats tied at the pilings — still exists in recognizable form on the Fish River in a way it no longer does on most of the waterways that have been transformed by development pressure in the rest of Baldwin County.
