Six rings. Six all-state selections. No one in Alabama has ever done it like Ava Hodo.

The Orange Beach senior catcher capped her historic Mako career with a sixth straight ASWA All-State nod, a state record, to go along with six consecutive state championships. Bound for Arkansas, Hodo leaves the Gulf Coast as one of the most decorated players in Alabama softball history.

She wasn’t alone. Orange Beach nearly swept the Class 4A individual awards, with Katie King named 4A Player of the Year and MK McMullan earning 4A Pitcher of the Year. King and McMullan were both named to the 4A First Team alongside Teagan Revette, who earned All-State honors for the fifth time in her career. Jayde Palmer rounded out the Mako haul with a 4A Second Team selection.

Austal USA celebrated the opening of a massive new submarine manufacturing facility Thursday in Mobile.

Vice Adm. Robert Gaucher said that by this time next year, with MMF3 fully operational, he expects Austal USA to have “over 1,200 employees working across three shifts,” exclusively on submarine work. And he had a specific challenge for Austal USA leadership.

“I know you’ve committed to me at least 660,000 hours of production by the end of this year,” he said. “But what I really want is you to exceed that. Hit the target of 880,000 [hours] in 2026 and more than double that in 2027. I’ll be tracking it personally each week.”

Austal USA President Gene Miller said the shipyard has delivered three submarine modules and has eight more in the works. MMF3 represents an investment of “about a half a billion dollars,” he said, and will dramatically accelerate production.

“We recognize that submarine manufacturing is one of the nation’s highest priorities,” Miller said. “And we’re just very excited to be part of supporting our country in increasing that manufacturing capability.”

Austal USA’s workforce currently stands at around 3,500 employees, Miller said. The ramp-up of work in MMF3 will be followed by the addition of another giant facility known as Final Assembly 2, where surface ships will be assembled and launched.

“Over the next three years, we’re looking to get to between 5,500 and 6,000 people,” he said.
