October is bringing something a little different to Orange Beach!

On Sunday, October 4, Orange Beach Parks and Recreation is hosting a special fall edition of its Pop-Up Farmers Market at Waterfront Park.

And this one has a particularly nice location.

Instead of setting up beside a busy highway or in a shopping center parking lot, the market will take place at one of Orange Beach's public waterfront destinations.

The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., with fresh produce and a selection of local vendors.

It's a combination that fits this part of Alabama perfectly.

Baldwin County has a substantial agricultural community, even though the beaches and tourism industry tend to receive most of the attention.

Drive north from Orange Beach, and it doesn't take long before the scenery changes from condominiums and beach businesses to farmland and rural communities.

Farmers markets provide another way for those different parts of Baldwin County to connect.

There's also the location itself.

Waterfront Park sits along Wolf Bay and provides a completely different experience from Orange Beach's Gulf-facing shoreline.

Instead of crashing waves and crowded stretches of sand, the setting offers views across the bay, mature trees and a more relaxed atmosphere.

The park also has walking areas, picnic facilities and a fishing pier.

With the market scheduled for a Sunday, it offers a different option for residents who can't make their usual Saturday shopping trips.

The city has confirmed the October 4 date and four-hour market window.

It's a welcome reminder that there's plenty happening around Orange Beach away from the beachfront.

And sometimes a Sunday morning beside the bay sounds pretty good.

You can drive past plenty of grocery stores between Foley and the beach, but there's another place to buy food that puts the people who grow and catch it much closer to the customer.

Coastal Alabama Farmers and Fishermens Market operates at 781 Farmers Market Lane in Foley, just off County Road 20 between Highway 59 and the Foley Beach Express.

And this isn't only a summertime market.

It's open year-round on Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., rain or shine, inside a large covered facility.

The market's stated mission is centered on Baldwin County agriculture and Gulf Coast seafood. Its vendors include local farmers and fishermen, with offerings that can include fruits and vegetables, seafood, beef and other locally produced foods.

That's a combination that makes a lot of sense in this part of Alabama.

Baldwin County has a long agricultural tradition inland, while just a short drive south you'll find commercial fishing communities and working waterfronts connected to the Gulf.

Here, those two worlds meet.

The market is operated under the purview of the City of Foley, and its official website describes it as the largest farmers market in Baldwin County.

There's also something refreshing about shopping this way.

What is available can change with the growers, fishermen and seasons rather than every Saturday looking exactly the same.

For people who haven't ventured off the main Foley shopping corridors, Farmers Market Lane is worth knowing about.

It's a little slice of Coastal Alabama where the farms inland and the waters closer to the Gulf can end up under the same roof on Saturday morning.

Current hours, address and market mission verified through the market's official website.

Every fall, the beach at Gulf Shores fills up with the smell of fresh shrimp and the sound of a community that has weathered every kind of storm the Gulf can throw at it. 🦐

The National Shrimp Festival has been running since 1971, born out of a small gathering meant to celebrate the local sh*****ng industry and it has grown into one of the biggest events on the Alabama coast, but the heart of it has stayed the same. It is fishermen and their families showing up for each other, year after year, no matter what the last hurricane season looked like.

There is something about a beach town that keeps throwing a party for its own fishing fleet, decade after decade, that says everything about how the Gulf Coast handles hard times. You show up, you cook what the water gave you, and you celebrate it together.

Have you ever been to a Gulf Coast seafood festival, and what is the first thing you look for on the menu?
