As we prepare to celebrate America's 250th anniversary next year, I've found myself reflecting on Fourth of July celebrations from years past.
My dad was a proud patriot, and every Independence Day he had a tradition of waking up the entire house at 6:00 a.m. with his own version of a "21-gun salute," which was firing three rifle rounds into the air to officially welcome the holiday. I also have fond memories of attending flag-raising ceremonies in my hometown of Corinne, Utah, where the community would gather to celebrate our nation's birthday.
In 1994, during a trip to Philadelphia, I purchased this flag at the Betsy Ross House. For the past 32 years, it has proudly flown outside my home on special occasions and holidays. This year, it was finally time to give it a good cleaning!
Proper flag etiquette recommends washing a flag by hand or on a delicate machine cycle. When a flag becomes too worn, frayed, or damaged, it should be retired respectfully.
As I look at this flag, I'm reminded how grateful I am for this country, the freedoms we enjoy, and the brave men and women who have sacrificed to protect them.
Happy Birthday, America! 🇺🇸
