That's part of ongoing research by California Fish and Wildlife, tracking how Roosevelt elk move along the Highway 101 corridor.

The data helps biologists understand migration routes and habitat needs, and plan safer crossings for elk and drivers alike. The same herds being studied are the ones grazing right past our meadow.

Today, on Indigenous Peoples' Day, we're honoring the Yurok Tribe, whose ancestral homeland stretches along the lower Klamath River and this coastline, including the stretch of Redwood National and State Parks near Hidden Beach.

Pacific lamprey are one of several fish species, alongside salmon, steelhead, and green sturgeon, that hold deep cultural and subsistence significance for the Yurok people. These fish are almost impossibly old: lamprey first appeared in the fossil record about 450 million years ago, and they've changed very little since. They were here long before the redwoods, long before the dinosaurs.

Pacific lamprey spend years as larvae in freshwater rivers, migrate out to the ocean to mature, then return upstream to spawn, mostly traveling at night. It's a life cycle tied to the health of this entire watershed, from the Klamath all the way to the coast.
