Karen Thomas Real Estate

Karen Thomas Real Estate In 2018, Barry and I made the move to Oriental, North Carolina, a decision that quickly proved to be one of the best of our lives. Somehow, it just works!

Barry retired, while I continued pursuing my career in real estate. We were both drawn to the outdoors, and this little corner of the world turned out to be the perfect place to spend time on, in, and around the water. Fishing has always been a passion of ours. Barry and I both love the sport, and I'm proud to say I've landed a 128-inch blue marlin as well as a 100-pound king salmon. With the Neus

e River and Pamlico Sound at our doorstep, there's no shortage of opportunities to cast a line or simply enjoy the natural beauty around us. From the beginning, this community has embraced us. During our first week here, Barry quickly discovered that retirement in Oriental didn't mean slowing down, it meant filling our days with new friendships, lots of activities, and the kind of genuine hospitality that makes this town so special. For us, Oriental has been more than just a home; it's been a lifestyle. Whether you're considering a second home, planning for retirement, or simply looking for a slower pace of life, this area offers something truly unique. My work in real estate allows me to share what I've learned, helping others find their perfect fit; it's like putting the pieces of a puzzle together until the picture is clear. What makes Oriental truly extraordinary is the people. It's a diverse community where folks from all over the world and from every background come together, each piece adding to the larger whole. At the end of the day, I can honestly say we've never been happier. And as I often like to remind myself, "It's always a GREAT day on the river!"

Some places serve food.

Some places become part of a town’s story.

Nestled along the harbor in the heart of Oriental, The Toucan has been the backdrop for countless sunsets, celebrations, regatta weekends, dockside conversations, and evenings spent listening to live music with friends.

It’s the kind of place where boaters pull up from the water, neighbors stop to catch up, and visitors quickly understand what makes this little village so special.

If you’ve ever watched the sun set over the harbor from a table at The Toucan, you know exactly what we’re talking about.

❤️ Share this with someone who needs a weekend in Oriental.

One of the best parts of living on the coast?
The wildlife becomes part of your everyday routine.

A turtle crossing the road on your morning drive. Dolphins surfacing off the dock. Egrets in the marsh. Tiny minnows in the shallows. Crabs scurrying through the backyard at sunset.

Around here, nature doesn’t feel separate from life — it’s woven into it.

It’s one more reason people fall in love with this place and never quite leave.

What’s the most unexpected wildlife encounter you’ve had along the coast? Drop it below 👇

And if this feels like you’re kind of living, share this with someone who belongs near the water.

People often ask us what makes Oriental so special.

The answer isn’t found in a brochure or a listing description.

It’s afternoons on the water.
It’s waving to neighbors from the dock.
It’s taking a break from the busy pace of life and remembering why you chose the coast in the first place.

This week, Karen and Chrystal spent a day sailing together—a simple reminder of what so many people fall in love with when they move here.

As real estate professionals, we help people buy homes every day. But what we’re really helping people find is a lifestyle.

If you’re considering a move to the coast, save this post as a reminder of what life in Oriental can look like.

And if you’re already lucky enough to call Oriental home, what keeps you here?

This is the kind of home that changes your pace the second you pull into the driveway.

Tucked inside a private neighborhood on Peninsula Drive, this property feels connected to nature in all the best ways — expansive porches, screened-in spaces made for slow mornings, a backyard that opens into the landscape, and a private dock that practically calls for sunset boat rides.

Inside, the open layout keeps everything feeling light, calm, and connected. Outside, it’s wildlife sightings, coastal breezes, coffee on the porch, and evenings that stretch a little longer than planned.

A home like this isn’t just about square footage.
It’s about how you live in it.

And send this to the person who’d claim the screened porch before you even unpacked.

Words cannot explain how grateful we are.

The amount of support we received at our Open House yesterday was incredible. Moving forward, we want to continue working closely with the community to create a space where everyone feels welcome.

Here are some words of gratitude from our team.

If you know, you know. 👀

Tucked right by the town dock, The Bean has quietly become one of those spots you end up returning to again and again — morning coffee runs, post-boat ice cream stops, bagels with friends, smoothies after the beach… it just fits the rhythm of life here.

We love places that make a town feel like home, and this is definitely one of them.

From the local art on the walls to the indoor + outdoor seating that invites you to stay awhile, The Bean captures so much of what makes this community special.

If you haven’t been yet:
☕ coffee
🥯 fresh bagels
🍦 ice cream
🌊 waterfront atmosphere

A pretty solid way to spend a Monday, if you ask us.

Tag someone you’re overdue for a coffee date with — or send this to a friend visiting town soon. 👇

Some spaces are designed to sell.
This one was designed to welcome.

This Sunday, we’re opening the doors to our new office space — a place shaped by conversation, community, and a deep appreciation for the village and the people who came before us. Coastal light, local art, familiar faces, and room to gather.

Join us May 31 from 3–6 PM for light bites, drinks, and good conversation. No presentation. No pressure. Just an open invitation to stop in, connect, and see what’s next for our team and this community we love being part of.

Bring a friend, stay awhile, and help us make this space feel lived in from day one.
