Last weekend, did a full one-hour performance in for the annual Shinnenkai (new year’s) celebration for the Japanese American Club of Rossmoor. We closed out the concert by bringing back one of our classic repertory pieces, Yama Arashi (mountain storm). We have not performed this piece in its original configuration for well over a decade due to the large number of drums required.

In this clip, Sensei Mui Ghent performs the opening portion of his solo. Is he Raijin Otoku (Thunder God Man), beating the drums to create thunder?

The antique red umbrella was among my mother’s belongings. It is very old and fragile, so I spent the night before the performance using washi paper and book binding glue to reinforce some areas. She passed away a few months ago so this was my way of bringing her spirit on stage with us. I think she would have loved it.
