Got back to beautiful Orlando. FL and my darling husband Rich who held down the fort and was working the whole time while I took off for the Arctic Circle in the mist of some of Florida’s hottest days. Remarkably it was not as cold as I had feared and was refreshing with clear skies and sunshine all day. I never saw a sunset. The sun sometimes hid behind a mountain only to appear again. Reykjavik was wonderful to see in the sun and my friend Ila and I walked everywhere, enjoyed a comedy act and a cover band in a library bar. It was bustling with people on the street whereas when I was there is the winter in 2021 it was blanketed with think snow. Then off on a cruise with Quark Expeditions to the Eastcoast of Greenland. So many amazing Icebergs but very few animals. Hunting has killed off the reindeer to extinction and polar bears don’t have a chance so they hide. I did see a muskcot, however, and so many pods of whales and porpoises from the ship and while enjoying the hot tub almost everyday on the deck. Spitsbergen, Svalbard was different as we saw great glaciers and less of the icebergs, but some wildlife. We saw 10 polar bears, loads
of birds, around 50 walruses, reindeer, and seals. Some saw the Arctic fox. I stayed on the ship for that last hike which was our last and the only gloomy day with some rain. The guides were amazing. They were so skilled and their knowledge was so great with one seminar after another. But they also had fun with an Arctic Competition, a get to know you bingo game, “What do you Learn on this Trip” completion and the polar bear plunge with an outdoor barbecue in the most beautiful long glacier location all around us and then dancing on the deck.
It is an experience that will stay with me forever. I feel blessed I was able to take a trip like this one.
