Most realtors will tell you to buy in a “good school district.” I’m going to tell you something different.
Florida is one of the most school-choice-friendly states in the country—and that changes everything about how you should think about where to live.
Here’s what that actually means for your family: In 2023, Florida became a universal school choice state. The Family Empowerment Scholarship program expanded to include ALL Florida students, regardless of household income. That’s roughly $8,000+ per child that can go toward private school tuition, homeschool curriculum, tutoring, therapy services, or approved educational expenses.
But that’s just one option. Florida offers multiple pathways:
The Florida Tax Credit Scholarship serves lower-income families. The Hope Scholarship exists specifically for students who’ve experienced bullying or safety concerns at their current school. The Gardiner Scholarship supports students with disabilities with flexible spending on specialized services. And Florida Virtual School is one of the oldest and largest online public school programs in the nation.
So what does this mean when you’re house hunting?
It means you’re not handcuffed to a zip code. That dream home in a neighborhood you love but with an “average” school rating? It might still be the right move. You have options your parents never had.
It also means if your child’s needs change—academically, socially, or otherwise—you’re not stuck selling your house to solve an education problem.
When I work with relocating families, especially those coming from states with fewer choices, this is often the conversation that changes their entire search strategy.
Your home should fit your life. Florida’s system lets education fit your child.
