The Two Greatest Honors of My Life:
1. Guiding Chris Nikic through the Ironman race
2. And now, being used as an example of the work of the Holy Spirit
Never did I believe that a man like me, coming from where I came from, having gone through what I have gone through, would be spoken of in such a way. I will never compare myself to the Holy Spirit but it brings me joy to be an instrument of the Spirit. Last Sunday, Pastor Ed Newton from Texas delivered a beautiful sermon from Community Bible Church and to my surprise, I saw a picture of Chris and I being displayed! A moment of huge triumph and overcoming adversity.
There are moments in life that transcend the ordinary—moments where the human spirit shines its brightest. Chris Nikic’s journey to becoming the first person with Down Syndrome to complete an Ironman is one of those moments. It’s a story of determination, courage, and breaking barriers that once seemed impossible.
On that unforgettable day, as Chris crossed the finish line, the crowd erupted in cheers, shouting his name: "Chris Nikic, you are an Ironman!" It was a victory not just for Chris, but for everyone who ever dared to dream big despite the odds. It was a moment of triumph, one that will inspire countless others to believe that anything is possible.
But behind every great achievement, there are often unseen forces at work—quietly guiding, supporting, and ensuring that the dream becomes a reality. As Chris’s guide, tethered to him throughout the race, I had the privilege of witnessing his strength up close. And while my role wasn’t in the spotlight, it was a reminder of something much deeper.
Pastor Ed saw a photo of Chris and me after the race reflected on the significance of that moment. He noticed the shirt I wore that simply said "Guide," and he shared how the image spoke to him about the Holy Spirit’s role in our lives. The Spirit of God is with us, every step of the way—guiding, encouraging, and helping us navigate the challenges we face, even when we may not realize it.
This journey wasn’t just about crossing a finish line; it was about faith, perseverance, and the power of unseen guidance. It’s a reminder that while we may not always be in the spotlight, our presence, our support, and our faith can make all the difference in someone else’s life.
Can I get an AMEN?!
