Pushing for a Streamlined Process While Mortgage Rates are Low

Last week, during the State of the Union address, President Obama stated that "overlapping regulations are keeping responsible young families from buying their first home". The President also requested a streamlined process for mortgages in order to help the economy grow.

As he made reference to mortgage rates that are near a 50 year low, the President also noted that too many families who want to buy a home and have solid credit are being rejected while others are being denied a chance to refinance even if they never missed a payment, which was another push for the Menendez-Boxer bill which would streamline the refinancing process for millions of homeowners.

Fair Housing Rules Updated to Address Boom-Bust Era Discrimination

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently announced a final rule to update and formalize the national standard for determining whether a housing practice violates the Fair Housing Act as the result of discriminatory effect.

To address post boom housing concerns, the rules now specifically address discrimination by loan servicers and others offering loan servicing and financial assistance.

Average 30-Year Fixed-Rate Mortgage Up a Smidgen

In Freddie Mac's results of its Primary Mortgage Market Survey®, the average fixed mortgage rates have changed little over the past four weeks which is helping to spur new home construction. After being flat for three straight weeks, the 30-year fixed edged up to 3.56 percent, while the 15-year fixed remained unchanged at 2.77 percent.
