Packing a Central Florida house is mostly deciding which box each thing goes in.

Tall flat items get tall flat cartons. Lamps lose their shades, which are packed separately. Shelving comes down only after the decor on it is boxed. Our packers work room by room, so every box that leaves the house is labeled and full.

This is what the inside of the truck should look like before the doors close. Boxes built into flat tiers front to back, wrapped furniture strapped against the walls, soft goods filling the gaps so there is nowhere left for anything to travel. Empty space in a loaded truck is the thing that causes damage.

Table tops, mirrors and glass shelving are wrapped one piece at a time, stood upright and never laid flat or stacked. Upright, a sheet of glass carries only its own weight. Flat, it carries the weight of everything put on top of it, and that is the moment it goes.

Central Florida staircases decide how long a move actually takes.

A straight run of stairs is easy. A turn at the landing with a banister on one side is not. We walk the stairs first, work out what will pivot and what will not, and protect the banister, the wall and the treads before anything goes up. Some pieces come apart instead of going round.
