Missouriās heat wave is pushing roofs to their limits ā and your attic is feeling temperatures far higher than what you see on the weather app.
With the excessive heat weāre seeing this week, itās a good time to talk about ventilation and your roof. Right now, roofs across the area are experiencing higherāthanānormal temperatures and intense, direct sunlight. Without proper attic ventilation, that hot air has nowhere to goāand your roofing system canāt cool itself the way itās designed to.
Poor ventilation is one of the most common causes of premature asphalt shingle failure. When the roof space overheats, the shingles and underlayment begin to break down much faster than they should. This becomes even more severe when a home has multiple layers of shingles, which trap additional heat. Itās not unusual to find shingles that are less than 10 years old but already in rough condition due to chronic overheating from inadequate ventilation or from having too many layers installed.
In some homes, there is no ventilation at all. When that happens, the temperatures inside the roof cavity can climb high enough to rapidly deteriorate the roofing materials. This affects more than just asphalt shinglesāflat roofs and tile roofs that rely on roll roofing as the primary water barrier can also suffer significant damage. These attics often show elevated moisture levels as well, which can lead to rotting sheathing, mold growth, and other moistureārelated issues.

There are several types of ventilation systems, and itās important to know which one your home usesāor have a qualified contractor evaluate it and make recommendations. Common ventilation methods include:
Gable vents: Screened openings at the gable ends that allow crossāventilation.
Turbine vents: Windāpowered vents that help pull hot air out of the attic.
Passive vents: Used on flat or lowāslope roofs to allow limited airflow between the sheathing and ceiling.
Soffit and ridge vents: Draw cooler air in at the soffits and exhaust hot air through the ridge. This is the most common system in newer construction and is generally the most efficient.
Powered vents: Thermostatācontrolled fans that activate when attic temperatures reach a preset level.
Combination systems: A mix of two or more ventilation methods, sometimes including throughātheāroof vents installed just below the ridge line.
