One of the most commonly recorded documents is a deed transferring title from the current homeowner to a new buyer. Real estate deed solicitation scams are a type of fraud where scammers send homeowners letters that look like official government documents. The letters often ask for money ($89-$120) to obtain a copy of the homeowner's property deed. However, homeowners can obtain a copy of their property deed for $1 per page from the County Recorder's Office. To avoid being scammed, homeowners should never pay a private company to obtain a copy of their property deed. They should also be suspicious of any letter that looks like an official government document. If you receive a letter from a company that claims to need money to obtain a copy of your property deed, contact the Recorder's Office to verify the legitimacy of the request. Here are some additional tips for avoiding real estate deed solicitation scams: Only obtain a copy of your deed from the County Recorder's Office. Do not pay a private company to obtain your deed for you. Be suspicious of any mailing that looks like a bill from a government agency. Read the fine print carefully before you provide any personal information or payment.
