Beware of this new scam!

SCAM ALERT:
A Sherburne County applicant for a land-use permit was targeted by a scam in which criminals are impersonating city and county planning and zoning officials to solicit fraudulent fees via wire transfer, peer-to-peer payment, or cryptocurrency.
The phishing emails appear highly convincing, referencing accurate permit details such as property addresses and case numbers, and are crafted to discourage victims from calling officials to verify the request.
We are encouraging county residents who receive an email asking for payment of any kind from a county department to call and verify the legitimacy of the request.
The scam emails include several details taken from public records that appear to be accurate, such as department employees’ names, job titles and information from the permit applications.
The scam appears to be targeting Sherburne County’s Planning & Zoning Department. If you receive an email request for payment from Planning & Zoning, call (763) 765-4450 to verify the payment request.
