The New York Life Building was the first skyscraper in Kansas City.

Kansas City's first skyscraper turns 136 years old this year.

When the New York Life Building opened at the corner of Baltimore and West 9th Street in 1889–1890, it was unlike anything Kansas City had ever seen. The city was still largely a collection of three- and four-story brick commercial buildings.

Then the New York Life Building arrived: a 12-story tower flanked by two 10-story wings, clad in brownstone and brick, with marble and mosaic interior finishes. It was designed by McKim, Mead & White, the renowned New York architectural firm behind landmarks including Madison Square Garden and the Boston Public Library.

Widely regarded as Kansas City's first skyscraper, the building introduced the city's first elevators and was among the earliest local structures to incorporate steel I-beams in its construction.

Its most recognizable feature is the bronze eagle above the entrance, cast by sculptor Louis Saint-Gaudens. The bird weighs two tons and has a 12-foot wingspan, wings spread as if shielding the doorway below. It has watched over that corner of downtown for over a century.
