🖤From Survival to a New Vision🖤

When Derion first came to St. Benedict’s Men’s Shelter, he had been experiencing homelessness for TWO YEARS. He spent his nights sleeping on sidewalks, benches, at bus stops, and even behind dumpsters.

He had never been in a homeless shelter before coming to St. Benedict’s. He said that coming through the doors the first time was scary and intimidating. But he says that what he learned and accomplished in his 3 MONTHS with us was worth every step.

He credits working with his case manager to help him get the things he needed to get back on his feet kept him motivated. He gained employment and launched his own clothing brand while staying at St Benedict’s. Now he is moving into his own place to call home!

His next goal is to open his own clothing store. Which we have no doubt that we will see that come to fruition!

“I look at life in a different way. I stopped taking things for granted.”

When asked what he wants the community to know about St. Benedict’s, Derion described it as:

“A safe haven for everyone. Let them help you”

When we were taking this photo, he said “This is going to shock a lot of people, no one even knew I was homeless”

⛳️💙 WHAT AN INCREDIBLE DAY! 💙⛳️

Our 11th Annual St. Benedict’s Shelter Golf Scramble was an amazing day of golf, fellowship, laughter, and most importantly, community coming together for a purpose!

We want to give a huge THANK YOU to every golfer who came out and played, every sponsor and business that supported us, everyone who donated food, prizes, auction items, or their time, and all of our incredible staff and volunteers who worked behind the scenes to help make today possible.

Events like this are about so much more than golf. Every team, every sponsor, every donation, and every person who showed up today helps St. Benedict’s continue our mission of providing hope, dignity, support, and a path forward for men experiencing homelessness in our community.

From all of us at St. Benedict’s ,THANK YOU for believing in what we do and for standing beside the people we serve.

Today we played golf, had some fun, and probably lost a few golf balls 😂… but together, we made a difference.

God blessed us with a beautiful day, some wonderful people, and another reminder of just how special this community truly is. 🙏💙

Mission:
We & Us brings together individuals currently experiencing homelessness, formerly homeless individuals, shelter guests, staff, and community supporters to create positive change through advocacy, service, leadership, and personal responsibility.

Purpose:
The purpose of We & Us is to make sure people experiencing homelessness have a voice in decisions and conversations that affect them. The group will also encourage members to be good neighbors, take pride in our community, serve others, and help change negative perceptions of homelessness through positive action.

We would like to give a heartfelt thank you to Kentucky Wesleyan College and the Panther Pantry for stopping by St. Benedict’s Men’s Shelter and recognizing the work being done in our community.

We are truly grateful to be included in this recognition and even more thankful for young people and organizations who understand the importance of serving others. Partnerships like these remind us that caring for our community is something we all do together.

As the message they shared from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. says:

“Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.”

St. Benedict’s Men’s Shelter is currently in IMMEDIATE NEED OF TOILET PAPER!

With the number of men we serve each day, this is one basic necessity we go through very quickly, and our supply is running very low.

Any donation, big or small, would be greatly appreciated and will help us continue providing a clean, safe, and dignified environment for the men we serve.

🎉 We are incredibly proud to celebrate one of our own!

Jessie Schartung, Program Director of St. Benedict’s Women and Family Shelter, has been selected for the Leadership Owensboro Class of 2027!

Jessie’s compassion, leadership, and commitment to serving individuals and families experiencing homelessness have made a lasting difference within our shelters and throughout the Owensboro community. She consistently advocates for others, brings people and organizations together, and leads with both strength and heart.

Join us on November 14 at the Daviess County Courthouse lawn for Night Without a Home, a community sleep-out dedicated to raising awareness about hunger and homelessness in our community.

From 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., we will come together to hear real stories, honor those affected by homelessness, share a meal, participate in meaningful discussions, and learn how each of us can help create lasting change.

Although spending one night outside cannot fully recreate the experience of homelessness, it can deepen our understanding and strengthen our commitment to advocacy, education, service, and solutions.

We are especially in need of milk, peanut butter, bottled water, hand soap, disposable cups, and men’s underwear.
