We & Us

The Daniel Pitino Shelter is launching a group made up of members of the county's homeless community, geared toward becoming more involved in the community and issues involving homelessness.

Today is a new day.

During lunch at the Daniel Pitino Shelter soup kitchen, Executive Director Harry Pedigo met with people experiencing homelessness to talk openly about concerns over what has been happening in our parks and community. Several people spoke up about how those actions affect everyone experiencing homelessness, including those working hard to be good neighbors.

That conversation led to action. People lined up to join We and Us, and others asked for bags and headed out to clean up the parks and surrounding area.

We and Us is more than a group. It’s a movement led by people with lived experience of homelessness who want to make positive change, lead by example, and show appreciation for our community.

Our first meeting is Friday, October 2, at 10 a.m. at the Daniel Pitino Shelter. We’ll meet on the first Friday of every month. Whether you are experiencing homelessness now, staying in a shelter or treatment program, or have experienced homelessness in the past, you are welcome to join.

Today, people chose to step forward. We’re ready to see where that leadership takes us.

One night. A greater understanding. A stronger tomorrow. 💙

Join us on November 14 at the Daviess County Courthouse lawn for Night Without a Home, a community sleep-out dedicated to raising awareness about hunger and homelessness in our community.

From 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., we will come together to hear real stories, honor those affected by homelessness, share a meal, participate in meaningful discussions, and learn how each of us can help create lasting change.

Although spending one night outside cannot fully recreate the experience of homelessness, it can deepen our understanding and strengthen our commitment to advocacy, education, service, and solutions.

The Daniel Pitino Shelter is seeking a dependable, skilled, and motivated individual to join our team as our Director of Facilities.

This is a full-time maintenance position responsible for helping keep our facilities safe, clean, functional, and welcoming for the individuals and families we serve.

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.

We are looking for someone with general maintenance experience, strong problem-solving skills, a good work ethic, and a heart for serving others.

The Daniel Pitino Shelter is looking for a dependable, compassionate individual to join our team as a Front Office Monitor.

📅 Saturday & Sunday
⏰ 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM
📍 Daniel Pitino Shelter – Owensboro, KY
💰 Starting pay: $11/hour

This position is much more than sitting behind a desk. Our Front Office Monitor helps keep the shelter safe, secure, organized, and welcoming while supporting our clients, volunteers, donors, and community members.

Responsibilities include:

• Monitoring and securing the facility and completing regular rounds
• Answering phones and assisting visitors and donors
• Receiving donations
• Assisting clients with daily needs and questions
• Announcing medication, meal, laundry, and chore times
• Signing off on completed chores and laundry schedules
• Supporting our kitchen and meal volunteers
• Maintaining professional boundaries and enforcing shelter expectations in a fair, firm, and consistent manner
• Documenting important information in staff logs and completing incident reports when necessary
• Communicating important information to the incoming shift
• Helping ensure the shelter remains safe and operates smoothly throughout the day

We are looking for someone who is dependable, observant, compassionate, organized, and comfortable working with people from all walks of life.

Our work is centered on treating every person who walks through our doors with dignity and respect, while maintaining the structure, accountability, safety, and security necessary for a successful shelter environment.
