Q: Are there any insurance benefits to obtaining a building permit for work around your house?
A: Yes.
1) Avoidance of Coverage Denial. If you do not have a permit and there is a claim related to the remodeling work, the insurance company may deny the claim due to non-compliance with local regulations.
2) Documentation for Future Claims. Having a permit provides documentation that can support future insurance claims by proving that the work was done legally and to code.

Cheaper is always better! Such a seemingly obvious contradiction is forgotten when people dig into their pockets when deciding on whom to contract to install a new Air Conditioning unit. Always use a licensed HVAC contractor, and Always, Always get a building permit. The piece of mind a building permit gives is worth every penny of the cost. The permit also requires a Title 24 inspection by a certified HERS Rater. According to the EPA, the typical home with a forced air HVAC system loses between 20 and 30 percent of its conditioned air due to duct leakage. That's a lot of wasted fuel.
