Contrary to popular belief, today is not Mexican Independence Day (that’s in September!). Instead, Cinco de Mayo honors the Battle of Puebla in 1862.

The Underdogs: A small, outnumbered Mexican army faced off against the much larger, better-equipped French Empire.

The Victory: Against all odds, the Mexican troops won the battle, providing a massive boost to national pride and unity.

The Legacy: While the war continued for a few more years, the victory at Puebla became a lasting symbol of resistance against foreign intervention.
