Well, howdy there! It's October! Y'all know what that means here in the Panhandle? We're about to hit my favorite season for critter control: Rodent Rush!

That's right, as the days get a little shorter and the very first hint of "cool" (meaning, not 100%-humidity-hell) starts to show up, those mice and rats start thinking about their winter condo. They've been living out in the palmettos and trees all summer, but now they want to find a nice, warm place with an all-you-can-eat buffet—which is usually your attic or garage.

What to Expect Right Now:

* Rodents (Rats and Mice): This is your big focus. They're on the move, looking for tiny gaps, like where utility lines enter the house or even a worn-out door sweep, to sneak in. Listen for scratching or scurrying sounds, especially at night.

* The Last of the Palmetto Bugs: Those big, flying American Cockroaches (Palmetto Bugs) are still kicking, mostly looking for damp spots, but their activity will start to slow down a bit as the temperatures drop.

* A Slowdown in the Yard: You'll see fewer Fire Ants and Mosquitoes in the yard, thankfully, but they won't disappear completely until we get a real cold snap.

Your October Pest Pal Action Plan

This is the time to play defense, folks! Let's make sure your home isn't the Ritz-Carlton for the local rodent population:

* Exclusion, Exclusion, Exclusion: Walk the perimeter of your house like you're inspecting a military base. Look for any hole or gap larger than a dime (that's all a mouse needs!) and seal it up with steel wool and caulking or hardware cloth. Pay close attention to the eaves, the garage door seal, and any pipes leading into the walls.

* Trim the Trees: Do you have limbs hanging over or touching your roof? Those are like a highway ramp for Roof Rats! Trim them back at least a foot or two from the house.

* Clean Up the Kitchen: Seal pet food in airtight containers, keep counters wiped down, and take out the trash regularly. A rat will thank you for a crumb trail, so don't leave one!

If you hear any suspicious bumps in the night, especially up in the attic, give it your attention now before one little mouse turns into a whole family reunion.
