My dad proudly served with the Fort Lauderdale Fire Department for 25 years. Being a firefighter wasn’t just a job to him—it was a brotherhood and sisterhood, and I know how deeply he felt the loss of so many of his fellow firefighters on September 11th.

I hate what it took for our country to come together that day, but I find myself longing for the unity we felt in the months that followed. We looked out for one another. We were kinder. We put differences aside. We were simply Americans.

Today, I remember the lives lost, the heroes who ran toward danger, and the families who were forever changed.

May we never forget what happened that day—and may we never forget how united we once were. 🇺🇸❤️

Saturday gave us the best of both Florida worlds.

It started with gloomy, gray skies and a cool breeze, while we spent the afternoon at the beach with some of our favorite people. The clouds cleared just in time for an unbelievable sunset and we traded the Gulf for a night at the river. Boiled peanuts, a practice lighted boat parade, and a sunset, then nighttime cruise under the full moon. I’ve never been out there at that time of night. It was so peaceful and quiet, not a gator in sight. 😉

Nothing fancy. Just beautiful moments, good people, and the kind of slow down I didn’t realize how much I needed.

Community Spotlight: Alyssa’s in Pace

For more than 20 years, Alyssa’s has been a local favorite filled with vendors, handmade crafts, food, Christian books and gifts, antiques, furniture, home décor and unique finds. Over the years, the Alyssa’s family has grown to include Alyssa’s Etc./The Refinery, Gather at Alyssa’s and Alyssa’s South.

But this place holds a special spot in my heart. ❤️

When I moved here in 2011 knowing ONE person, the Savvy Shopping Sisters, a FB group I joined to help make ends meet, would gather in the Alyssa’s parking lot every week to exchange things we’d bought and sold. We’d pop open the trunks of our cars and Amy Day Allen, current owner of Everyday Nutrition in Pensacola, would stand in the back of her pickup truck with a megaphone, calling out names so everyone could find each other. 😂 It was basically Facebook Marketplace before Facebook Marketplace!

I had no idea those connections would eventually lead me to teaching fitness classes 13 years ago. 163 of those ladies showed up to my first Zumba®️ class— changing the course of my life and giving me my chosen family.

All these years later, Alyssa’s is still a great place to find treasures, but for me, it’s also part of where I found my people. ❤️
