The U.S. Geological Survey has released the most detailed, interactive, national-scale geologic map of the contiguous United States to date.

This Cooperative National Geologic Map brings together over 100 existing datasets, providing an unprecedented look beneath the surface from rock types and ages to geologic structures, and all in a user-friendly, analysis-ready format.

Why it matters:
➡️Enhances hazard assessment (earthquakes, landslides, subsidence)
➡️ Informs infrastructure planning and land use decisions
➡️ Expands tools for surveyors, mappers, GIS professionals, educators, and researchers
➡️Showcases the power of collaboration between federal and state surveys

For surveying and geospatial professionals, this is a milestone resource that underscores the critical role of accurate, accessible data in supporting science, safety, and sustainable development.

Respect to the pioneers who mapped the way forward! Plane table surveying was widely used before the advent of electronic distance measurement tools. It involved real-time field sketching and direct mapping. The presence of a female surveyor in historical imagery is rare, making this an important representation of women's contributions to the profession. This photo may date to the early 20th century, when women in surveying were still an exception rather than the norm.

How has field mapping changed since the days of plane table surveying?
