I heard about a closing last month that fell apart in the most absurd way.
The sellers had already signed all their paperwork remotely ten days before closing. Everything was done on their end. The buyers were ready.
On closing day the buyers showed up for their final walkthrough. Standard process. Make sure the house is empty and in the agreed condition before heading to the title company.
They walked up to the house.
The seller opened the door.
Still living there. Furniture everywhere. Nothing packed. Not a single box.
The buyers said we are here for the final walkthrough before closing in two hours.
The seller looked confused. Closing is today?
She had completely forgotten.
Ten days earlier she signed everything and just never realized the actual closing date had arrived.
She called her husband while the buyers stood there. Laughing. Saying she forgot and had not packed anything.
No urgency. No apology.
The buyers called their agent. The agent called the listing agent.
Turns out the listing agent was on vacation and also forgot to remind the sellers.
Closing canceled.
The buyers had to reschedule everything. Movers. Time off work. Their entire plan.
The buyer told me the worst part was hearing the seller laugh about it like it was nothing. Meanwhile their entire life was on hold.
Some people treat the biggest transaction of someone else’s life like it does not matter.
Comment OOPSIE if this would drive you crazy.
