Meet Peanut. She's a red-eared slider turtle with a shell shaped like a figure eight — and there's a heartbreaking reason why.
When Peanut was just a hatchling, she got stuck inside a plastic six-pack ring. Nobody found her in time. As she grew, the ring didn't grow with her. It slowly squeezed her shell into an hourglass shape, pressing into her body and organs.
She was finally rescued in Missouri back in 1993. The ring was removed, but the damage was already done. Peanut's shell had grown around that plastic for good. There was no undoing it.
Instead of hiding her away, the Missouri Department of Conservation gave Peanut a job. For over 30 years, she's been meeting people face to face, showing them exactly what a piece of trash can do to a living animal.
In 2025, Peanut turned 41 years old. She's still here. Still living proof that one careless piece of plastic can change an animal's entire life.
Her story comes with a simple lesson: cut the loops on plastic rings before you throw them away, and always make sure litter ends up in the bin, not the ground. It takes seconds. For Peanut, it would have made all the difference.
She didn't get to choose the shape of her shell. But she's spent her whole life helping make sure fewer animals have to go through what she did.
