I am super excited to announce this as it’s been a long road to get this put together, but we are starting an investigator led study at the University of Florida for dogs that have been envenomated by Eastern Coral Snakes (Micrurus fulvius). We will be using the drug varespladib to treat them for these bites. Varespladib is a phospholipase A2 inhibitor. PLA2 is the main component of coral snake venom. Varespladib has been used in many different studies to treat coral snake and other snake bite envenomations. As part of meeting standard of care, a vial of coral snake antivenom must be given to the patients enrolled.
We need to enroll ten dogs into our study that have moderate to severe clinical signs related to coral snake envenomation.
If your pet is bitten by a coral snake. Please bring them to, or contact the University of Florida to have your pet evaluated to see if they meet enrollment criteria.
Patients who meet enrollment criteria will receive varespladib, one round of baseline labwork (CBC, Chemistry, urinalysis, venous blood gas), an IV Catheter, some hospitalization, and a vial of coral snake antivenom at no cost. The owner is responsible for all other costs.
We will leave this post open for any questions. Please only comment if you have a question about the study.
