I was three when Close Encounters of the Third Kind came out, so last night was my first time seeing it in a theater. And not just any theater. 70mm film at the opening night of the Palm Springs 70mm Film Festival.
That alone would have been enough.
Then they told us there was a secret double feature. Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day, his brand new take on alien government disclosure, hadn’t been shown to the public yet. It doesn’t hit theaters for another couple of weeks. We saw it for free.
Go see Disclosure Day. Oh my gosh.
If you love movies, comment “Film Festival” and I’ll send you the full list of upcoming festivals in the desert.
The 70mm Festival runs through Sunday if you’re local.
Lawrence of Arabia, Boogie Nights, West Side Story, 2001: A Space Odyssey, all on the big screen the way they were meant to be seen.
That’s Palm Springs for you. Always something magical around the corner.
