I moved to Palm Springs in the 80s, when August meant the valley went quiet for the whole summer.

Saturday night I stood in an arena with 10,000 people watching Earth, Wind & Fire and Lionel Richie, and it hit me how far this place has come.

There’s more here now than most people who haven’t visited in a decade could imagine. And it’s only getting bigger.

Turns out you can build a whole life here, even in the summer, not just a vacation.

Sell now. Use the proceeds while everyone is still here to see the fruit of it: care that gets covered when it’s needed. A grandchild’s education, a wedding, a first home, funded at the moment it means the most, not decades later in a will.

I used to think being prepared meant keeping everything “just in case”.

A stack of notebook paper my kids haven’t touched in five years. Supplies for problems that never came.

I’ve changed my mind. I don’t want to be prepared.

I want to be resourceful, like MacGyver, who never needed a bag full of stuff, just the wisdom to use whatever was already there.

It’s changed how I think about my own home here in Palm Springs.

Less stockpiling, more trust that I’ll figure it out when the moment comes.

So what’s the point of social media, actually?
A month after my dad’s funeral, I stepped back from it completely. I couldn’t handle the check-ins and the explaining, so I went quiet. That was the right call for me at the time.

But yesterday I saw a friend celebrating her first walk after spraining her ankle. I sprained mine ten days ago too, so I reached out. We ended up having a real conversation, and it was lovely.

If you’re in the middle of overwhelm and the noise feels like too much, take the time you need. That matters.

But don’t lose the small stuff underneath it. I’m friends with a woman in Calgary I had dinner with once, and somehow two hurt ankles lifted my whole mood yesterday.

That’s the gift hiding inside all this noise.

I’m done getting stuck in the doom scrolling loop.

It’s been too long where other people have driven the narrative in my brain and I’ve allowed it.

It’s time to focus away from lack and scarcity and the cringiness of life.

It’s time to focus on better.

It’s time to amplify the good in our life: the people that are helping, the places where it’s getting better, and places where we can act.

I’m committed to a better life and better days ahead. Are you?

I was three when Close Encounters of the Third Kind came out, so last night was my first time seeing it in a theater. And not just any theater. 70mm film at the opening night of the Palm Springs 70mm Film Festival.

That alone would have been enough.

Then they told us there was a secret double feature. Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day, his brand new take on alien government disclosure, hadn’t been shown to the public yet. It doesn’t hit theaters for another couple of weeks. We saw it for free.

Go see Disclosure Day. Oh my gosh.

The 70mm Festival runs through Sunday if you’re local.

Lawrence of Arabia, Boogie Nights, West Side Story, 2001: A Space Odyssey, all on the big screen the way they were meant to be seen.
