Hidden History of Palos Verdes 🌊

Have you ever wondered why it’s called Portuguese Bend?

The name dates back to the 1800s, when Portuguese whalers worked along this rugged stretch of the Palos Verdes coastline. When migrating gray whales appeared offshore, crews launched small wooden boats directly from the beach and operated a shore station along what was then an almost completely untouched Peninsula.

More than a century later, the landscape has changed, but the name remains.

I’ve lived on the Palos Verdes Peninsula most of my life, and I still love discovering stories about the place we call home.

This is the first in my new series, Hidden History of Palos Verdes, where I’ll share a piece of PV history you may not know every Friday.
