The scuppernong grapes are now ripe and in the market! Named after the Scuppernong River which empties into the Albemarle Sound on the coast of North Carolina, these wild grapes were cultivated by English settlers as early as the 1600’s. The green-bronze grapes like full sun, high humidity, a sturdy trellis, and well-drained, acidic soil. We eat them by sucking out the pulp and discarding the thick skin and bitter seed. The name is Native American.

The Apalachicola bluffs and ravines is a top ecological hotspot with rare geologic formations, extreme biodiversity, and relict species found nowhere else on Earth. Steephead ravines create shaded microclimates distinct from the rest of Florida. Ice-age relics, the cool, moist ravines act as a repository where plant and animal species from the Appalachian Mountains survived after migrating south during the last ice ages. The dry uplands support fire-maintained longleaf pine savannas, which rank among the most biodiverse ecosystems in North America. The abrupt changes in elevation and light create ecotones that shelter rare plants and unique animals native to only a handful of panhandle counties. Robust populations of gopher tortoises dig burrows that provide critical shelter for more than 300 other dependent species. The broader Apalachicola River Basin supports the highest amphibian, reptile, and fish diversity in Florida.
