If you’ve been around Papillion you probably are familiar with this special butterfly that pops up throughout the city on different things.

For those that don’t know, here are some facts!

The City’s Name: The word “Papillion” is derived from papillon, the French word for butterfly. Early French explorers named the local Papillion Creek after observing swarms of butterflies along its grassy banks.

The Dual Meaning: To create a fierce and dignified athletic identity, the school played on the dual meaning of the word “Monarch”. It honors the native Monarch butterfly while using a literal monarch (a king or royal ruler) as the visual mascot.

The Logo: The Papillion-La Vista High School Athletics logo features a royal crown rather than an insect, which the district notes is intended to represent leadership, excellence, and dignity
