Tired of roommate roulette?

Meet Roum

We’re building a smarter way for Gen Z and millennials to find compatible roommates and housing without the stress, scams, or randomness of traditional roommate hunting.

Instead of just matching people based on budget and location, Roum focuses on compatibility.

Sleep schedules
Cleanliness habits
Lifestyle preferences
Communication styles
Guest boundaries
Work from home vs nightlife energy

Because the wrong roommate can cost you peace, productivity, and money.

Finding housing should feel safer, easier, and more intentional.

Whether you’re relocating, trying to save money, escaping a bad living situation, or just looking for your next place, Roum is designed to help you find people you actually vibe with.

This is more than an app.
It’s the future of shared living and community.

Should you live with a FRIEND or a STRANGER? 🤔

Most people choose based on comfort.
Smart people choose based on compatibility.

—————————

👥 Living With a Friend

✅ Pros:
• You already know their personality and habits
• Less awkwardness in the beginning
• Easier to build trust and communicate quickly

❌ Cons:
• Boundaries can get blurry fast
• Small issues can turn into friendship-ending drama
• People avoid hard conversations because “we’re friends”

—————————

🧍Living With a Stranger

✅ Pros:
• Fresh start with clear expectations
• Easier to set rules and boundaries early
• Sometimes strangers become the BEST roommates because communication is intentional

❌ Cons:
• You don’t know their real habits yet
• Higher risk of incompatibility
• People can fake being “clean” or “quiet” during interviews

—————————

The truth?

The BEST roommate isn’t your best friend.
It’s the person whose lifestyle matches yours.

Sleep schedule.
Cleanliness.
Guests.
Noise.
Communication.

That matters more than friendship.

Most people don’t realize this until it’s too late:

Your roommate can completely ruin your peace.

———

Messy house.
Loud nights.
Random guests.
Late rent.
Passive aggressive tension every single day.

———

And the crazy part?

Most of the time the red flags were there from the beginning.

———

People choose roommates based on:

“Yeah they seem cool.”

Instead of:

“Can we actually live together?”

———

That’s why I made this guide.

If you’re looking for roommates, stop relying only on vibes and start comparing:

• communication
• cleanliness
• schedules
• guests
• finances
• lifestyle habits

———

A peaceful home starts with compatibility.

What’s the WORST roommate habit you’ve dealt with?

5 simple things that make living with roommates easier:

• Set cleaning rules before move-in
Example: dishes done before bed, trash taken out when full.

• Talk about guests early
Ask how often people come over and if overnight guests are okay.

• Split bills clearly
Decide who pays what and set due dates before the first month.

• Say things when they happen
Don’t let small frustrations build for weeks.

• Do a roommate check-in once a month
Even a 10 minute conversation helps prevent tension.

Most roommate problems start with things nobody talked about.

Most people are not struggling because of one huge expense.

It is the small recurring costs adding up every month.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Here are 6 ways to take back control:

• Audit every subscription you pay for
• Cancel anything you have not used in 30 days
• Calculate the yearly cost, not just monthly
• Move canceled subscription money into savings automatically
• Replace convenience spending with better systems
• Avoid lifestyle creep as income increases

Here are 5 ways to reduce the pressure:

1. Lower your fixed living costs
Housing is usually the biggest expense. Sharing housing, negotiating rent, or relocating can create thousands in yearly savings.
2. Stop budgeting only month to month
Track your next 6 to 12 months instead of only your next paycheck. Planning ahead reduces panic spending and financial surprises.
3. Build one additional income stream
Freelance work, content creation, certifications, or online skills can create leverage outside your primary job.
4. Audit subscription lifestyle creep
Small recurring expenses add up fast. Most people underestimate how much they spend monthly on convenience.
5. Find people moving in the same direction
Your environment affects your financial habits, motivation, and opportunities more than most people realize.

This generation does not need more hustle culture.
It needs smarter systems, financial awareness, and community.

That is part of why we built Roum.

Most roommate problems aren’t about bad people—they’re about unclear expectations.

The biggest source of roommate conflict? No defined rules.

Not “be clean”… but specific standards:
– Clear counters by 9PM
– Dishes done within 2 hours
– Trash taken out when full

When there’s no clarity, there’s guessing.
And guessing leads to frustration, tension, and passive-aggressive conflict.

The truth: 90% of roommate issues can be prevented in the first week, with honest communication and clear house rules.

If you want a roommate situation that actually works, you need a system, not assumptions.

14.4 Million Americans now have roommates.

Not because they want to…
Because they have to.

Rent is rising faster than income in nearly every major U.S. city.

• Record-high rent in 13 of the 30 largest metros
• Housing affordability at all-time lows
• Millions turning to co-living just to stay afloat

This isn’t a trend. It’s a shift in how people survive.

Co-living is becoming the new normal.

If you’re paying too much in rent, you’re not alone — you’re just early to the problem.

Join Roum and save thousands on rent.

We take you behind the scenes of our app development journey on day five. We started with Repl.it for quick prototyping, but as the app grew, we realized we needed better scalability. We’ve now migrated to AWS, utilizing RDS and PostgreSQL for our database, S3 for storage, and CloudFront for content delivery. We also automated our workflow with GitHub Actions after a late-night debugging session, eliminating the need for manual deployments. Next, we’re moving our domain from Wix to Route 53 to consolidate everything on AWS.
