APRIL TORNADO RISK! 🌪️

April is when we begin to enter the climatological peak of tornado season. The winter jet stream starts losing its grip as warm air surges north more frequently. Storm systems this time of year also tend to move quickly, with large-scale, progressive troughs often leading to multi-state outbreaks and extended severe weather sequences.

The Midwest, central Plains, and northern Plains typically see an uptick in tornado activity too as warm, humid air continues to expand northward. Peak season is nearly here, and now is a great time to clear out storm shelters and review your family’s severe weather safety plan!

Liking and sharing this post is one of the easiest ways to support our work—and it’s completely free! It also helps spread awareness for current and future severe weather events, keeping more people informed and prepared.

Here’s our WNK risk map for tonight’s severe weather.

This graphic is not meant to replace the Storm Prediction Center outlooks. Instead, we broke the threat down into simpler categories to help explain where impacts could be greatest across Kentucky as the line moves through.

Also keep in mind: storms will likely occur outside of the time windows shown.
Those time ranges represent the most likely window for severe weather in each region.
For most locations, the highest risk will be during the first 20–30 minutes as the leading edge of the line arrives. Once that front edge passes, the severe threat should drop off quickly, although rain and thunder may continue for a bit.

As always, we’ll be live tracking the storms tonight here on Weather Now Kentucky.
