Looking back…

In a year where winter barely showed up and spring seems to have arrived early, it feels almost surreal to remember 1983, when Heber City faced severe spring runoff flooding.

That year, water followed a historic drainage path through town, and neighbors came together to protect homes and businesses. Sandbags lined Main Street, helping guide the rushing water north toward the fields.

The flooding of 1983 was driven by a perfect storm of conditions across Utah. Exceptionally heavy snowpack. A cold spring that delayed the melt and then rapid warming and rain. It’s a powerful reminder of how quickly nature can shape a community and how communities respond when it matters most.

Do you remember the flood of 1983 in Heber? I’d love to hear your stories or see your photos. Comment if you lived in Heber and what your experience was during the spring of 1983.
