Utah was named the No. 1 state in the nation for the third straight year, according to U.S. News & World Report's 2025 Best States rankings.
The big picture: Researchers used 71 metrics across eight categories (like education, economy and crime) to gauge how well states are performing for their citizens.
State of play: Utah ranked No. 1 in fiscal stability and third in both economy and infrastructure.
The state also ranked fourth for education, seventh for crime, and No. 14 and 19 for health care and opportunity, respectively.
Yes, but: The Beehive State came in No. 48 in the environment category, ahead of only Louisiana and Indiana.
Ozone pollution in the Salt Lake City-Provo-Orem metro area is among the worst in the U.S.
Zoom out: New Hampshire, Idaho, Minnesota and Nebraska rounded out the top five.
Louisiana, Alaska, Mississippi, New Mexico and West Virginia were the bottom five.
