Most California voters cast their ballots by mail, but two big federal changes are in the pipeline that could impact how those ballots are handled and counted in the November election.

One could come from a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that’s expected soon, and another through the United States Postal service, which is working to comply with President Donald Trump’s executive order that would give the agency the final say over who receives a mail-in ballot.

The efforts come as Trump and his allies have scrutinized mail-in ballots for years, claiming without evidence that states with longer count times and universal mail-in voting are allowing widespread cheating. Research shows fraud rates remain extremely small.

A major ruling could end mail-in grace periods

Fourteen states, including California, count mail-in ballots that arrive after Election Day, as long as they are postmarked by then and show up within a certain window. The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to hand down a decision that could end that kind of grace period.

Mortgage markets remained sensitive to movements in energy prices last week. Optimism surrounding a potential agreement to ease tensions in the Middle East helped push oil prices down to their lowest levels since March, reducing inflation concerns. The Fed meeting created volatility over two days but had little lasting impact. In addition, the reaction to a stronger than expected consumer spending report was muted. As a result, mortgage rates ended last week slightly lower.
As expected, the Fed left the federal funds rate unchanged last Wednesday, and the language favoring an easing as the next move was removed. Investors focused mainly on the latest "dot plots" which reflect individual officials' forecasts for future interest rates. In his first meeting as the new Fed Chair, Kevin Warsh declined to submit a dot plot, describing them as unhelpful for conducting monetary policy. The dot plots from the other 18 officials were split, with nine projecting at least one rate hike this year, eight no change, and one anticipating a rate cut. This was more hawkish (in favor of tighter monetary policy) than had been expected. Investors now have priced in one 25 basis point increase in the federal funds rate by the end of the year.

Moving is one of the greatest stressors in life, but it’s important to save some of that adrenaline for the final task: unpacking. If you’re surrounded by boxes and feeling a little overwhelmed, these tips can help make the unpacking process go more smoothly.

1. If you hire movers, the heavy lifting will be done.

They’ll move the big pieces into their proper places and assemble bedframes. Movers will also save you time by putting boxes into the right rooms (as long as you’ve carefully labeled the boxes with their destination). If you are handling the move yourself, use furniture sliders and moving blankets/pads—and exercise caution to prevent injury.

2. Be prepared with the right tools.

Wear an apron and have unpacking tools at hand—box cutters, scissors, cleaning spray and dust rags. Wipe down each room and make any necessary repairs before unpacking.

3. Unpack the essentials first.

These are all the things you need on the first day after the move. That includes bedding, toiletries, phone chargers, medications, laptops and other equipment for work and school homework. Put perishable foods in the refrigerator.

4. Have a donation box and garbage bag handy as you unpack.

You should have decluttered and donated items you didn’t want before your move, but don’t feel bad about tossing or donating items you’ve moved but don’t really need.

5. Establish an unpacking order.

Go room by room. The three priorities are generally the kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms. Then move on to important common areas. Closets, storage areas and the garage can be tackled last. If you work from home, the home office may be high on your priority list.

6. In each room, unpack all boxes and discard them first.

Once the boxes are moved out, then you can organize and put items away.

7. If you have kids or other help, put them to work.

Assign age-appropriate tasks, or have them organize their own room or smaller rooms. As you move from room to room, you can rotate the delegation of opening and unloading boxes; breaking down boxes and packing materials; removing the boxes and other discards from the room; and taking out the trash.

8. Set a timer.

Unpacking in timed spurts will make the task manageable. Between timed work periods, reward yourself with a treat or drink. For example, unpack for 45 minutes and then take a 15-minute break. Only unpack for a set number of hours each day to avoid burnout.

9. Set realistic goals that are manageable.

Unpacking and settling in is a marathon, not a sprint. Everything doesn’t have to be done on the first day or even in the first week. Pace yourself and set daily goals for what you want to accomplish.

10. Make it fun.

While you work, listen to your favorite true-crime podcast, stand-up comedian, audio book or hype music. Sing, laugh and dance to make the time go faster. You might even find yourself enjoying it.

During the summer break, as part of the Eaton Fire recovery, PUSD will remove fire-related contaminants impacting soil and trees in designated areas at 11 campuses and sites following requirements from the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC). PUSD has worked closely with environmental experts, arborists, and DTSC to assess fire-related contaminants impacting soil and trees and determine the appropriate next steps.

The work will take place while students, staff, and community are off campus. Restricted areas have remained closed since last year, and affected areas will be restored with clean soil and replacement trees to support safe, healthy school environments.

During the summer break, as part of the Eaton Fire recovery, PUSD will remove fire-related contaminants impacting soil and trees in designated areas at 11 campuses and sites.

Just a few weeks after the fires started, PUSD entered into a “voluntary cleanup agreement” with the Department of Toxic Substances Control, or DTSC, to address potential contamination at 15 campuses. The state agency oversees removal of such contaminants at places like schools.

Pasadena Unified then hired environmental consulting firm Verdantas to test soil at those campuses.

Last May, the school district released the results of those soil tests, which found elevated levels of toxic metals, primarily lead, at 13 campuses.
